the point of the "waving the gun around" scene in the elevator was to establish that "SEAL Steve" was totally hardened to anything but his agenda at that point in his life - we've watched that change throughout the show with his tenderness towards Grace and with the young Asian boy living with is grandfather, who's father had been killed - and all areas of growth from hardened, unfeeling, duty-driven SEAL to leader of a task force who now considers those on his team to be his extended family.
And even tho he continues to cut his mother, girlfriend and others a break, he still get "crapped" on but has learned to keep his head during it all.
I think this show is doing a great job of showing the evolution of Lt. Cmdr Steve McGarrett to Steve the son, friend, boss and "Uncle" myself... :)
