Hrm, so I've seen a few fan fics involving the S2 Halloween ep and Danny's 'disrespect' for the sacred location and, well, they all seem to start with the automatic assumption that Danny was completely in the wrong for disrespecting Island beliefs. That regardless of his concerns about evidence loss in an outdoor location, he was a Bad Person for letting expediency overrule cultural respect*. Are there any fics out there where Danny actually stands up for himself as a police officer doing his job and treating all crime scenes by the same standard whether it's a religious site, a public cemetery or, say, a military monument which is normally opened only by a strict ceremony? Or calls Steve on the disrespect the SEAL has shown for Danny's principles and beliefs in the name of expediency?

* WARNING : Minor rant : And seriously? On their first case as a fully established team, Steve couldn't take the 5 seconds out of a chase to let a group of civilians off the elevator car and gratuitously waved his gun around in front of a small child. The team regularly uses 'aggressive interrogation' tactics that violate not merely the law, but the oaths that they have all taken to uphold the constitution of the US and Hawaii. They offend, harass, and invade privacy on pretty much a daily basis and it's all good in the end because they Need to Get The Job Done(tm) and they are way awesome BAMFs who Don't Let Anyone's Approval Stop Them From Doing Their Jobs(tm). But heaven forbid (literally) that a specific cultural standard of religious belief, or a specific individual of a Hawaiian priest be given anything but complete deference when processing a crime scene.

the point of the "waving the gun around" scene in the elevator was to establish that "SEAL Steve" was totally hardened to anything but his agenda at that point in his life - we've watched that change throughout the show with his tenderness towards Grace and with the young Asian boy living with is grandfather, who's father had been killed - and all areas of growth from hardened, unfeeling, duty-driven SEAL to leader of a task force who now considers those on his team to be his extended family.

And even tho he continues to cut his mother, girlfriend and others a break, he still get "crapped" on but has learned to keep his head during it all.

I think this show is doing a great job of showing the evolution of Lt. Cmdr Steve McGarrett to Steve the son, friend, boss and "Uncle" myself... :)

I haven't seen any fics where Danny stands up for his treatment of the crime scene. I would love to see a fic that does that. I also have always wondered what the cops thought that the criminal did when he was dumping body parts there. If it was so unforgiving to go into the scared site, (I have no idea how to spell it) did the doctor take along a kahuna to bless the site before he dumped the bodies there? I mean the site had been desecrated for years by the criminal, why weren't the cops upset about that? And come on, the homeless guy never caught the doctor dumping body parts there over the years he was doing so?

This probably doesn't fit exactly, what you're looking for, but I remember reading one, where Danny could see and interact with ghosts and the ghost of a priest burried in the heiau gave him the blessing to set foot on scene. I can't find the link right now, but I keep looking.

Thank you so much for this rant!

I'm kind of tired of seeing fans amazed because "they're so BAMF!". Just think about how many people they have killed/badly injured in the last 50~60 episodes, how they have killed/badly injured and not looked back on those dead/badly injured people. As much as they're bad guys, it doesn't make it okay to take a life like that or beat the crap out of someone.

For once it would be nice to see a fic with Danny standing up for what he believes. Even if in the show, it looks like he kills bad guys and doesn't care about the lives he's taken, I'm pretty sure a RL guy like him would. Even if in the USA, cops are allowed to shoot even with civilians around, I'm pretty sure Danny would think twice, even thrice before doing so. That's something I haven't seen often, the characters having a conscience about that.
